Breast Lift Surgery: Is ths Surgical Procedure for You?

I have many friends who have had children, and once done breastfeeding, are unhappy with the appearance of their breasts. Over coffee, they ask me questions about breast lift surgery. I explain that a mastopexy or “breast lift”, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts.

As they are aware, factors such as pregnancy, breast-feeding and aging take their toll on a woman’s breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts will often lose their shape and firmness, and begin to sag.

Many women sometimes ask me for more information. As an operating room nurse, I tell them that breast lifts are performed under general anaesthesia, and the procedure usually takes three hours. Dr. Niessen uses an anchor-shaped incision following the natural contour of the breast, or an incision around the edge of the areola A mastopexy does leave scars, although they are usually covered by a bra or bathing suit.

Since they have children, who require care, they are interested in the recovery period. I explain that post-operatively they will have a supportive dressing. Also their breasts will be swollen for 5-7 days. They will be given a prescription for a pain medication. At approximately five days, the operative dressing is removed and is replaced with a bra.

Although they may be active in a day or two, they may be off work for a week, depending on the level of activity required for your job. I mention they should avoid lifting anything over your head for three to four weeks, and strenuous sports for about one month. After that, they may resume your normal activities.
