We receive many questions about placement of implants from our patients. When a patient has breast augmentation surgery, the breast implant can either be placed partially under the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular) or on top of the muscle and under the breast gland (subglandular).

No one incision or placement choice is right for every woman. In consultation, you and Dr. Niessen can discuss your many options you have to achieve your desired look.

There are many factors to consider when deciding about the placement of your breast implants. Submuscular placement may make your surgery last longer, and may make your recovery longer. However, some of the benefits are that the implants are less palpable, you have a decreased risk of developing capsular contracture, and it will make it easier to image the breast during mammography.

When having breast augmentation with subglandular placement of your implants, your surgery and recovery may be shorter and less painful. However, it may result in more palpable implants, a greater risk of capsular contracture and more difficulty imaging the breast during a mammogram.

Dr. Niessen can help you decide which placement is best for you.
