Smoking causes the blood vessels to constrict, reducing the blood supply and the oxygen carried by the blood to the surgical area. The tissues need this blood supply and the oxygen that the blood carries in order to heal. When the blood supply is reduced the tissues heal more slowly. For patients who come to our office wishing to have an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck, one of the first questions they ask is how long is the recovery. We tell them recovery is generally two to three weeks. Dressings come off at day 5 post-op. Post-op surgical drains stay in for approximately 10 days, depending on how much you are draining. For one to two weeks your abdomen will be swollen, but by one week post-op you should be able to resume light activities.

Dr. Marcus P. Niessen obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1991. He completed his residency in plastic surgery at the University of Western Ontario. He then completed a fellowship at University Hospital in London, ON. Dr. Niessen is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, with a specialist’s designation in Plastic Surgery, which he obtained in 1997.
