Every woman is an individual, and therefore has different results whether before a pregnancy or after. Your breasts will enlarge and will go through all the usual changes associated with pregnancy. Patients often ask me if having breast implants will affect mammography. Having breast implants may make mammography more difficult. It is important that you tell your mammography technologist that you have breast implants prior to the procedure. Special displacement techniques and additional views may be required.

With many patients wishing to go away for March Break, we are often asked if they can sunbathe if they have had breast augmentation surgery. Tanning salons or sunbathing will not hurt your breast implant, but it may make your scars worse. You should avoid sun exposure or wear sunscreen over your incisions. This is the best to ensure an optimal scar.

Breast Augmentation surgery is normally performed using one of two common incision sites: around the nipple (periareolar), or within the breast fold (inframammary). A periareolar incision offers the benefit of being the most concealed, however, it may cause some difficulty with breast feeding. An inframammary incision is very popular because it is concealed in the skin fold below the breast.

We tell them that they will probably feel somewhat tired and sore for several days following breast implant surgery, and their breasts may remain swollen and sensetive to physical contact for 2-3 weeks. However, in almost all cases the patient is up and mobile the same day as surgery.

We receive many questions about placement of breast implants from our patients. When a patient has breast augmentation surgery, the breast implant can either be placed partially under the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular) or on top of the muscle and under the breast gland (subglandular).
