Some patients wonder if they should be at an ideal weight before having breast augmentation surgery. We tell them they should be close to their ideal weight. A significant loss of weight after receiving breast implants could alter the results in a manner that is not satisfactory to them. There could be some ptosis or drooping and a reduction in size as the patient loses breast volume. A significant gain in weight could cause an increase in breast size.
We receive many questions about placement of implants from our patients. When a patient has breast augmentation surgery, the breast implant can either be placed partially under the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular) or on top of the muscle and under the breast gland (subglandular). (more…)
Will my breasts still move like normal breasts? This depends on multiple factors, such as the type of breast implant you have, the placement of the implant, the way your body holds the implant and whether or not there is any degree of capsular contracture. It is possible for many women to have breast implants that are soft and move nicely, while other women have results that are firmer and with an implant more fixed in position.
Can I go to the tanning salon or sunbathe if I have implants? Tanning at salons or sun bathing will not hurt your breast implant, but it may make your scars unfavourable. You should cover your scars with sunscreen should you choose to tan until your scars have faded.
Patients often ask me if having breast implants will affect mammography. Having breast implants may make mammography more difficult. It is important that you tell your mammography technologist that you have implants prior to the procedure. Special displacement techniques and additional views may be required.
